Sustainable eCommerce – MaCher Mailer™


As a certified B Corporation, sustainability is part of our ethos at MaCher. Almost every product that we design offers consumers a secondary use. In working with some of the leading brands and retailers in the world, we’ve created some amazing innovations over the past 30 years.
We’ve taken a hard look at eCommerce over the past year, and the amount of boxes and bags that are shipped is staggering. Ecommerce is growing faster than ever, and expected to grow 57% by 2018. That’s an incredible amount of packages, not to mention packing materials.

There has to be a better way!?!
As with any design project, we looked at the situation holistically. We set out to further understand the consumer experience, objectives of the brand/vendor, and effects of the purchase.
Here are the biggest challenges with eCommerce shipments today:
  • Significant Waste – most shipments are shipped in corrugated boxes loaded with packaging materials. Hopefully, these materials end up getting recycled, but the most optimistic figures state that only 70% of boxes are recycled.
  • Limited Brand Engagement – once opened, packages and packing materials serve no purpose to the consumer. The consumer is no longer engaged with vendor once the they open the package.
  • Poor Consumer Experience – the experience of receiving and opening a package is often underwhelming. I’ve ordered cashmere sweaters from prestige department stores to find them arrive in a dirty gray poly bag.
There’s has to be a better way, so our Australian and U.S. creative teams have done brainstorm after brainstorm to look alternative approaches that are sustainable, while offering an improved experience for the consumer, and an increased brand exposure for the brand.

I’m pleased to say that we’ve developed a solution that is a complete game-changer for eCommerce shipments. We’ve patented the solution, and we’re rolling it out to retailers and eCommerce companies over the next few months.
